Everyday superheroes

Lola’s birthday party last year was superhero themed.  The kids came in, colored superhero sheets, declared their superhero names and powers, and made capes while waiting for the rest of their friends.   Then they performed superhero missions!  They explored treacherous areas, fought villains, uncovered a double-agent, and had a rousing good time.  At one point, a boy said “this is even better than MY birthday party!” which we felt was a ringing endorsement from a 7 years-old kid.  Eric and Raina co-planned and executed that birthday party and it went off without a hitch.

Lola wanted another superhero birthday party this year … and she decided it should be about being an everyday superhero.  Everyday superheroes help other people, show kindness, and do good for others.  So, Lola celebrated her birthday at the St. Louis Area Foodbank.  She invited a bunch of kids (and siblings and parents) to come do service together and she requested food donations instead of presents.  In the 3 hour shift, the crowd packed over 15,000 pounds of food, which provided over 12,000 meals for hungry folks in the region.  We had a great time and we are proud of our almost-8-years-old everyday superhero.
