Vacation 2019: Maine

Krystal's best friend from Owensboro moved from Phoenix to Scarborough, Maine, and promptly began the invitations to come visit.  We finally made it up there this summer and it was absolutely wonderful to spend a few days with Jessie and her family.  Even though we had not seen each other in years we still had that immediate and deep connection.  I'm so grateful we were able to go.

Regrettably, there are not many Whompton photos of that time that don't involve Jessie's children (and I'm not certain what her family's desires are in posting those).  So, to recap, Jessie was an amazing hostess -- in between hosting guests the previous two weeks and leaving town immediately after we left -- and she showed us Scarborough beaches, lighthouses, her neighborhood, an adorable 4th of July parade, a boot camp class, and how incredibly patient and loving she is as a parent.

Her cats kept catching chipmunks.  We spent a lot of time freeing chipmunks from the clutches of Astrid and Alice.

We spent a morning at Higgins Beach (?), which was an interesting experience.  Sandy beaches with large boulders as the "dunes" so, at high tide, the only place to go was up on the rocks.  Also the water is COLD!  The temperature didn't stop Mainers though.

The lighthouse kept sounding its foghorn every 30 seconds and a companion lighthouse out in the water responded back.  As a result, the foghorns sounded every 15 seconds for the entirety of our visit.  Was it foggy?  Not at all.  Was it silly?  Yes.

Jessie's neighborhood has their own 4th of July parade.  We walked and waved at the neighbors who stood at their mailboxes rather than walking the 1 mile distance.  Absolutely adorable experience.

The LL Bean flagship store was quite impressive -- much more than the REI store in Denver.  The goal was to get new backpacks for the girls but we walked out with far more than that!  If I lived anywhere near Freeport I might be shopping their clearance racks all the time.  We didn't impulse buy a new tent with its own mud room but we eyed it for a long while.
